Watersports

The meandering waters of the Maury River form the beating heart of our community, so if you love to paddle and play … you’re in good company! Here are a few of our favorite spots for a river adventure:

Heart-stopping Whitewater

In spring, the Maury River transforms into a wild surge of whitewater for kayakers making the six-mile run through the gorge at Goshen Pass – a route considered by many to be some of the state’s most challenging whitewater. This stretch of the river is located just 30 minutes up the road to the west of Lexington–a perfect day trip.

Lazy Floats & Leisurely Tubing

If you’re looking for a more relaxing route, consider a canoe or kayak float, or even a tubing trip, especially on the Maury between Jordan’s Point Park to Buena Vista. Download a river map to plan your journey.

The Upper James Water Trail

This 59-mile stretch of the nearby James is designated as a Virginia Scenic River, offering unspoiled views of the surrounding countryside. Several local outfitters rent canoes, tubes, and kayaks, with guided trips available.
