Fishing

Here in our peaceful river city, it’s never a surprise to see a local strolling through town with a fishing pole in tow. Everyone has their favorite spot along the Maury – home to smallmouth bass, rock bass, fallfish, and bluegills–or on the nearby James River, too. Here are some tips for folks looking to hook the big one:

Glen Maury Park

For a family fishing trip, our 315-acre park is a natural pick. In the fall and spring months, the Maury River is stocked with trout. A boat launch for canoes and small craft makes this a convenient spot.

The James River

Not far from Buena Vista, fly anglers may try their hand on the nearby James River and its surrounding tributaries, where trophy trout beckon, particularly around Buffalo Creek–a special regulation fishery.

If you’re just getting started, make sure to purchase your fishing license–available at Buena Vista’s Clerk of the Court–and consider reading up on regulations and tips from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. A lifetime of adventure awaits.
