Your Career Path with the Buena Vista Police Department
Application and Interview
The hiring process begins with an initial screening and interview to determine each applicant’s potential for success in law enforcement. A critical first step in this process is completing the police department application fully and accurately.
Attending the Police Academy
Once selected for employment, new recruits attend the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy, where over the next six (6) months they receive comprehensive training in the core skills and knowledge necessary to begin a career in law enforcement.
Field Training Program
After graduating from the police academy, officers transition into the department’s Field Training Program, where they apply their classroom instruction in real-world situations under the guidance of experienced Field Training Officers. This phase is designed to build confidence, competence, and readiness for independent patrol duties.
Performance Evaluation Phase
All newly hired officers serve a twelve (12) month probationary period beginning on their original hire date. This final phase of the hiring process allows the department to evaluate each officer’s performance, reliability, and professionalism prior to confirmation as a permanent member of the department.
